Matteo Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he admitted that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Surprising Comeback

A single player remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He joined originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to determine the exact type of the player's talent. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
