British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
